Here is the nice little checklist for going to and from camping that we use. It’s based on the one from the blog Camp Westfalia, and a post on the “VW Eurovan Campers” Facebook forum and its comments. I think these are the basics and what most folks do. Obviously add steps as needed if you have things like solar panels, etc.
CAMPING CHECKLISTS
Checklist for Going Camping
- The day before
- Check the tanks (do you need to fill or empty anything?)
- Pre-chill the fridge overnight
- Load up whatever you can
- Check that the ceiling CO alarm works and your fire extinguishers are good
- The day of
- Load up the rest of the things and the cold food
- Switch fridge to battery (DC) for driving
- Setting up camp
- Fill the water tank if needed (there are spigots at the campsites)
- Park and level the van, set the parking brake
- Pop the roof up
- Hook up to shore power
- Turn the LP gas on
- Switch the fridge to LP or shore power (AC)
- Set up the awning, screens, etc.
Checklist for Coming Home
- Leaving camp
- Disconnect from shore power
- Turn the LP gas off
- Switch the fridge to battery (DC)
- Put the pop top down (hear two clicks, attach the seat belt)
- Close the top vent
- Face seats forward (or some vans won’t start)
- Check underneath the van for supplies that ran away
- Check under the hood for sleeping rodents.
- Remove levelers
- Empty gray water and trash on the way out (campsite should provide where)
- At home
- Drain water supply tank (and rinse/sanitize if you like)
- Turn off fridge and clean (leave it open to prevent odors)
- Unload
- Put the pop top up for a day to let it dry out
